Diabetes Support

Individuals looking for diabetes support have numerous options. Communities across the country have their own diabetes support groups for adults with diabetes and parents of children with diabetes. These diabetes support groups can provide information, advice, nutritional information, referrals for reputable doctors and simply a safe and welcoming environment for concerned and stressed individuals.

There are also several websites that offer diabetes support and information. The American Diabetes Association website is extremely thorough and easy-to-navigate. Internet users visiting the American Diabetes Association website will find loads of helpful information, message boards, chat rooms, enewsletters and information on National Diabetes Month and World Diabetes Day. The American Diabetes Association has declared November as National Diabetes Month and the 14th of November as World Diabetes Day. The American Diabetes Association leverages this month and day to inform others about the heightened risk of diabetes, prevention practices and treatment options.

To account for the nearly double incidence of diabetes among the Hispanic and Latino population, the American Diabetes Association has developed Por tu Familia, a program aimed at educating and supporting Hispanics with diabetes. Many diabetics in the Hispanic and Latino population feel guilty spending time and money on diabetes support or care. This should not be the case; helping yourself is also helping your family, hence the program name! Additionally, the American Diabetes Association hosts Feria de Salud, an outdoor community event meant to reach thousands of Hispanics and Latinos with important messages about the risk of diabetes. Feria de Salud is held in cities across the country, including Houston, New York City, San Jose, Miami, Los Angeles and more. The American Diabetes Association-sponsored event involves music, dancing, nutritional information, cooking demonstrations, speakers and product/service booths.
